Coach Steve Bucknall inducted into Hall of Fame
Nice to see this Basketball England report of our own Coach Bucknalls induction into his high school hall of fame. Many congratulations Coach. We hope you enjoy the celebration and well deserved acknowledgement of your many achievements.
English basketball legend Steve Bucknall is to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at The Governor’s Academy, where he became a McDonald’s All-American in his senior year at the prep school in 1985.
Bucknall is a former England captain with 114 caps for his country as a player, winning bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and 38 caps as National Team Head Coach of the U18 Men. As Head Coach, he led England to a 9th place finish in the 2013 Division A European Championship, the highest position England has ever achieved.
During his time at The Governer’s Academy, then known as Governer Dummer Academy, from 1981-1985, Bucknall had a distinguished career, highlighed by winning the New England Class C Championship in 1983-84 after going undefeated on the year.
The 6’6″ Bucknall averaged 30 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists in his Senior year at The Governer’s Academy, and had career highs of 55 points and 27 rebounds. Not only was he distinguished on the basketball court, but also left an impression on the football pitch, being named to the All-League Soccer team three times.
“I’m very proud of the fact because I know the history of the school,” Bucknall said on his coming induction.
“It’s one of the first boarding schools ever in america, has a long history and tradition and I’m proud to be a part of that now. I have very fond memories of my high school experience, it was fantastic and my first really introduction to America, so I’m really quite chuffed to be named in their hall of fame.”
Established in 2002, The Governor’s Academy Athletic Hall of Fame was established to recognise the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of members of the school community who excelled in athletics while students at the Academy and beyond, and those coaches and friends who gave their time and effort to the athletic program at the Academy.
Bucknall went on to an impressive college career at University of North Carolina before having a 15 year professional career around the world, including a stint with the LA Lakers, and time in Germany, France, Italy and Greece, as well as the UK.
The Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony and luncheon will take place during the school’s ‘Cardinal and White Day’, on Saturday, October 24, 2015.
Basketball England would like to congratulate Steve on his induction!
